What is Medicare?

According to the official U.S. Government Medicare site (Medicare.gov), it is defined as follows.

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD).

The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services:

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. Part A is typically free if you have worked 40 quarters or 10 years.
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
Part B covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. A premium is attached based on taxable earnings.
Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans)
A type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A and Part B benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans include Health Maintenance Organizations, Preferred Provider Organizations, Private Fee-for-Service Plans, and Special Needs Plans. If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, most Medicare services are covered through the plan and aren’t paid for under Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer prescription drug coverage.
Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage)
Part D adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans and some Medicare Private-Fee-for-Service Plans. These plans are offered by insurance companies and other private companies approved by Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans may also offer prescription drug coverage that follows the same rules as Medicare Prescription Drug Plans. Click Here to enroll in a prescription drug plan.
Medigap Policies
A Medigap policy (also known as a Medicare Supplement) is an insurance policy that helps supplement Original Medicare and is sold by private companies. A Medigap policy can help pay some of the remaining health care costs that Original Medicare doesn't pay, such as covered services, supplies, copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. These are “gaps” in Medicare coverage.

FAQ about Medicare

What does Medicare pay for?
Generally speaking, Medicare pays (about) 80% of medically necessary services. The two basic pieces to Medicare are Part A and Part B. Part A covers hospitalization and Part B pays for doctor and inpatient services. Experimental and cosmetic procedures, routine dental, hearing, and vision checkups are excluded.
Will my doctor be in the Medicare network?
There is no “network” per se. However, most doctors that treat an advanced population take Medicare assignment.
How much does Medicare cost?
Part A is generally free; that is, you have already pre-paid this portion through years of payroll taxes through your employer. Part B requires a premium based on your income.  For example, your 2024 Part B premium is assessed based on your adjusted gross income (AGI) from your 2022 tax return. Contact me for a free analysis of that cost.
How do I pay the Part B premium?
If you are receiving Social Security benefits, your premium will be automatically deducted. If you have not yet filed for Social Security benefits, your premium can be mailed to Medicare each quarter. We can help you set up a monthly draft with Medicare.
How do I enroll in to Medicare?
  1. If you are NOT taking social security payments, log on to Medicare.gov and follow the prompts for enrollment.
  2. Or: Call 800-772-1213
  3. Or: Visit your local Social Security office
  4. If you are employed and want to keep your employers health care plan, then enroll in Part A ONLY! Keep your “credible” insurance and file for Part B when needed later.
  5. If you have Part A and want to add Part B, call the number above or visit your local social security office.
How are Medigap policies priced?
Even though Medigap policies are standardized, pricing varies based on age, zip code, gender, marital status and tobacco use. Once we have these details, we can recommend the best policy for your situation.
Can you help me determine what program is best for me?
Yes, call or contact me through the website
I need more information about Medicare. Where can I go?
There is a wealth of information to be found on the Medical Buyers Guide.
